  • Grease and line two baking trays. Sift the flour into a large bowl and rub in the butter until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. Stir in the sugar and spices. In a separate bowl, whisk the treacle with the egg and pour onto the dry ingredients. Stir well and mix into a smooth dough. Wrap the dough in cling film and put in the fridge for 30 minutes to rest.
  • Preheat the oven to 200°C/180°Fan/Gas Mark 6. Divide the dough into 6 pieces, be sure to keep the dough not currently in use wrapped otherwise it can dry out. Roll the dough out so it is 5mm thick. To build a basic house you will need:

    2 roof pieces (18cm x 12cm)

    2 matching sides(16cm x 10cm - cut out a window on one side)

    2 matching ends - 12cm wide and 17cm high to the tip (one with a front door cut out).

  • Lay the pieces on the baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for 10-12 minutes until slightly risen and evenly cooked. Leave to cool slightly on the baking sheets, then place on a wire rack to cool completely.
